Louise Saxton
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia | Reclaimed Textile & Mixed-media Artist | Resident in 2014
Louise Saxton is visual artist living and working in Melbourne, Australia. Having first trained in painting and printmaking, Louise transitioned to working with reclaimed materials in 2000. Since then, she has considered her art process to be mixed-media assemblage with a focus on discarded materials from the home. For the past two decades, the artist has collected and reimagined the culturally marginalised and finite resource of needlework for her art. She has done this in order to save it from obscurity or worse, from the landfill, and considers her work a 'silent collaboration' with the original needleworkers. Her long-term reclamation project seeks to elevate their handwork and memorialise their labours through her own.
Saxton achieved a Bachelor of Arts: Fine Art in 1992, a Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts in 1994 and a Master of Fine Art in 2003. She has exhibited throughout Australia since 1990 and internationally since 2008. Her work is held in private and public collections in Australia, the USA, Malaysia and India.
In October 2024 she self-published a monograph of her reclaimed textile works, titled LOUISE SAXTON cut & pinned.
Louise Saxton is represented in Australia by Gould Creative.
